CELPIP Exam Format

The CELPIP exam is divided into four models: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. The CELPIP test doesn’t involve an examiner for the speaking exam like other English proficiency tests like IELTS, OET, PTE, etc. It is fully a computer-based exam. The candidates will reply to on-screen prompts for the speaking test.

We will look into the CELPIP Test Format here. The are two types of CELPIP exams.

  • CELPIP General Test
  • CELPIP LS Test

CELPIP General Test:

CELPIP General Test has four components. They are Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. Each test is used to evaluate the candidate’s skill set in the exam. This test is used for personal designation and permanent residence applications by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

The CELPIP General Test will be conducted for 3 hours.

  • Listening (47-55 minutes): Listening to passages and answering questions.
  • Reading (55-60 minutes): Reading passages and answering questions.
  • Writing (53-60 minutes): Respond to questions with written answers.
  • Speaking (15-20 minutes): Reply to on-screen prompts verbally.

The CELPIP General Test is scored from 1 to 12. Each of the four test sections is evaluated independently, and the total score is calculated as the average of the four sections.

The CELPIP LS test evaluates the candidate’s Listening and Speaking skills and is officially designated for Canadian Citizenship applications by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), and also accepted for professional designations. The CELPIP LS exam time is for one hour.

  • Listening (47-55 minutes): Listening to passages and answering questions.
  • Speaking (15-20 minutes): Reply to on-screen prompts verbally.

The CELPIP LS test score is similar to the CELPIP General test, the score will be from 1 to 12. The score is calculated from the two tests and the average score will be given to the candidates.
